Basketball To Auckland

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Auckland won the mens national invitation indoor basketball tournament in Invercargill last night when it beat Otago, 85-80, in the final

Auckland led. 43-39. at halftime and maintained its lead in the second spell in spite of Otago’s attempts to level. Otago was one point down with 2min to go, bul lost its grip of the game. Auckland and Otago both went unbeaten to the final, having beaten Nelson and Palmerston North respectively in the semifinals earlier yesterday. After leading for most of its game, Canterbury had a welldeserved win over Wellington, 90-63, for fifth place. Wellington was caught napping by the fast Canterbury team, which led, 44-32, at half-time.

Southland and Combined Services were fairly evenly matched for seventh place. Combined Services won, 72-71. North Queensland beat Hawke’s Bay. 79-64.
