Junior Red Cross Delegates Meet

Miss Margaret Hickey, the deputy chairman of the American Red Cross, told the delegates’ meeting of the Junior Red Cross of the North Canterbury centre yesterday that she had come 10,000 miles to represent her country at their meeting.

Miss Hickey, who is in New Zealand visiting Red Cross branches, said: “We must show how much we care for one another. I realised that people are willing to take great risks to help one another when I was in Geneva at the centenary of the Red Cross.”

She told the 200 delegates, ranging in age from eight to 18, that she had now visited 91 of the member countries of the International Red Cross. She asked one boy in the audience to select the American flag from the great dumber decorating the stage. Miss Susan Moore, who was the chairman for the day, said that the North Canterbury centre’s way of communicating internationally was through stamp greetingcards, which had New Zealand stamps and designs on them. She presented Miss Hickey with one made by a local member. Besides the talk given by Miss Hickey, the delegates were entertained by an address from Mr J. Talbot about Red Cross work in Vietnam. He was a member of the New Zealand Red Cross team there in 1968. There were also slides on North Canterbury centre activities shown by Mr R. J. Lipscombe, and Miss E. Neville told the young people how they could make use of left-over materials. Mr Lipscombe, secretarymanager of the North Canterbury centre, showed slides of the “meals-on-wheels” scheme as an example of what the senior members of the centre were doing.
