A Fantasy Island
“H. R. Pufnstuf,” a children’s musical-adventure series featuring elaborate! ycostumed live actors in fantasy roles, will begin screening from CHTV3 oh September 7.
The story centres around Jimmy, a young boy who is ship-wrecked on a fantasy island ruled by a friendly dragon named “H. R. Pufnstuf.” The island is a magic place, the wonderland of a child’s imagination, a place where trees talk, flowers dance and animals sing. Although the inhabitants are friendly there is an evil force on the island . . . Whitchiepoo.
In each episode Jimmy tries to return home, only to be thwarted by the wicked witch Whitchiepoo.
The part of Jimmy is played by Jack Wild who started out on an acting career five years ago as one of Fagin’s pickpockets in the stage presentation of “Oliver!” He is now well known for his part in the film version of “Oliver!” as the Artful Dodger. The N.Z.B.C. will be playing twenty-six episodes at weekly intervals from each of the main centres. The programme has been bought for a maximum of three runs over the next three years.
