City Works
Sir, —If the rate of progress on two other City Council projects, the slipway for Rescue II and the reconstruction of Moorhouse Avenue, is any indication, athletes arriving for the 1974 Commonwealth Games will be expected to include a saw, hammer, and concrete float among their field equipment.—Yours, DO IT YOURSELF. August 8, 1970.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “Within the limited financial resources available, it has proved
difficult to find a satisfactory solution to the problem- of providing slip facilities for the new Sumner lifeboat Rescue II at Scarborough. Design work is proceeding and it is hoped that the matter will be resolved soon. Tenders for the reconstruction of Moorhouse Avenue, from Barbadoes Street to Fitzgerald Avenue, together with the realignment of Waltham Road up to the north side of the overbridge, have been called and will close next Thursday. The contract period is six months. Work on the reconstruction of the eastern section of Moorhouse Avenue, from Fitzgerald Avenue to Ferry Road, has suffered a serious delay because of the collapse of a sanitary sewer after the work was well advanced. About seven chains of sewer remains to be relaid and this is unlikely to be completed until early October. The remainder of this part of Moorhouse Avenue will be restored to a goodquality surface when bituminous hot-mix base course is laid next week.’’]
