Films For Young People
Sir,—As a group of young adults we are concerned about the lack of suitable films shown in and around the city. When we wrote to your paper a few weeks ago, we at the same time wrote to the managers of theatres, but have received no replies. At present there is only one film showing which is suitable for general entertainment. Surely the public deserve something better than this! By the lack of their replies, we feel that the theatre managers are not concerned whether they serve the public fully and we would be interested to hear their views on this through "The Press.”—Yours, etc, J. M. CARROLL, President, Young Christian
Workers’ Movement August 17, 1970. [Mr S. E. M. Moodie, of Kerridge Odeon Corporation, Ltd, replies: “We do agree that the majority of films these days concern themselves with the more adult type of theme. Doing this is initiating nothing: it is merely paralleling other communica-. tions media and is in keeping with the mores of the permissive times in which we live. But it must be remembered that at other than school holiday times, Mondays to Fridays, children are either at school or away to bed early in the evenings. Therefore, ■ theatres can reasonably expect to be catering to an almost entirely adult patronage. Referring again to school holidays, when children are about every day, it will be found that at those times there is a goodly array of suitable family filjn fare available. Perusal of today’s amusement page of ‘The Press’ will surely bear out this assertion.”] [Mr L. G. Norman .of
Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd, replies: “Your correspondent is referred to the current lineup of attractions, for all ages and tastes, screening at Amalgamated Theatres, and as advertised in the daily press.”]
