Sugar Prices
Sir,—l read with interest the announcement of the sugar price increase and the statement that treacle and golden syrup would also be affected. I would like to be enlightened as to why prices of these products are not lowered accordingly when the world price justifies a reduction in sugar per lb. Approximately two years ago a 21b tin of golden syrup could be purchased for 13c. The present cost to the housewife is 20c. It appears the price has steadily climbed, but I can at no time recall an adjustment reducing the price although the sugar price has fluctuated during this period.—Yours, etc, J.F.F. August 19, 1970.
[The New Zealand Sugar Company, Ltd, replies: “Increases in the price of refined sugar in the last two years have been caused solely by variations in the cost of raw sugar. In the case of golden syrup and treacle the cost of raw sugar is not quite as significant an item, and other cost components have varied appreciably, particularly the' cost of tins and cartons in which these products are packed. For this reason the alterations in the price of golden syrup and treacle have not always been made at the time when refined cugar prices have altered.”]
