Lincoln In Form

LINCOLN COLLEGE 19: L. Karatau, R. Moore, B, McConnochie and D. Hales, tries; S. C. Murray a conversion and a penalty goal.

LINWOOD 8: B. Eider a try; P Jellyman a conversion and a penalty goal.

Making far better use of its opportunities, Lincoln College was clearly a better team than Linwood in a match at Lancaster Park South, although in the last 15 minutes Linwood was able to use its strong-running backs to an impressive extent. Lincoln College’s forwards dominated Linwood's eight for most of the match, and until the closing stages, Lincoln’s backs looked far sharper and more purposeful. It was a game of movement, for while both sides tried to run their backs, there were fairly frequent errors which led to swift counter-attacks. Lincoln’s superiority was based on an abundance of possession. Although I. Mallard contributed some fine leaping for Linwood near the end of the line, Lincoln won the lineouts convincingly, was a little quicker to the rucks, and the hooker, P. Horrocks, won several tight-heads. The Lincoln pack was all purpose and it usually provided Karatau with tidy ball. The Lincoln five-eighths, P. Peacocke and Hales, were both dangerous runners, but Hales’s try, spectacular as it was, was scored after some woefully weak tackling. B. Martin, a promising centre, did not have one of his best days but Murray at fullback, after looking much less authoritative: than usual for 20 minutes, played another good ga unwood’s most impressive moments were in the first 10 minutes and the last 15, for Lincoln started a little sluggishly. I. Phillipa impressed as a loose forward of promise and behind him Elder again played well, with a good, quick service. He covered and tackled soundly. R. Cocks on the rightwing was full of running, and looked the best of the threequarters, but he had few chances. Referee: Mr H. H. Gray.
