Big Win To St Bede’s

St Bede’s College beat Shirley J Boys’ High School, 30-3, in a I first XV match at Shirley’s r grounds on Saturday. 1 In the last minute of play, St 1 Bede’s scored a try that would J equal any seen in secondary I school Rugby. Shirley had a penalty at- I tempt at goal which missed, St 1 Bede’s worked a scissors, and 1 every member of the St Bede’s ( side must have handled the i ball before P. Gill scored in 1 the corner. Other try scorers for St i Bede's were A. Murdoch (2), K. i Keane and B. Mills. C. Dixon t kicked two penalty goals and t converted three tries. Keane a

also potted a goal. 1 For Shirley, D. Reid kicked a i penalty goal. < The teams were:— 1 St Bede’s College.—T. J. ( "’ ■ ]

Mooney; A. J. Murdoch, C. T. Dixon, P. M. Gill; C. J. Connolly, K. J. Keane; B. G. Mills; T. J. Cunneen; A. R. Bell, M. A. Wright, B. J. Rogatski, L. J. Jenkins; B. C. Sheehan, K. J. Hoare, C. F. O’Neill. Shirley Boys’ High School. —R. Lodge; B. Burrough, J. Gallagher, C. Lange; M. Rose, M. Williams; S. Scott: C. Moore; G. Day, D. Reid, R. Smith, E. Askew; w. Uru, R. Davidson, G. Ayers. The St Bede's forwards dominated play in the first spell and gave their backs a plentiful supply of ball. O'Neill made some penetrating runs and was well supported in the tight by Hoare and Wright. Bell was efficient at the back of the lineout and was well supported in the loose by Cuneen. A feature of the play was the strong driving runs of the St Bede’s pack, and also its quick rucking. Mills, at half-back, sent out excellent passes and made some telling runs to dictate the trend of play. Unfortunately, Keane, at first five-eighths, kicked far too often and two little was seen of the talented back-line.

Gill and Murdoch made the most of the few opportunities given them and Connolly looked dangerous, though inclined to hang on too long. Mooney was a sound last line of defence. Shirley, though beaten, never let up. Smith gave St Bede’s a lesson in line-out play in the second spell and was well supported by Reid. Davidson was often to the fore and although Askew and Moore played their part the pack did not show the cohesion and drive of the rival eight. Scott, at half-back, came through a difficult day well. Williams handled and kicked

with aplomb but was not able to set his back-line alight. Rose was always a danger but had limited opportunities. Shirley were unfortunate to lose its captain and goal-kicker, Gallagher, early in the game. Lodge, at full-back, cleared the ball effectively and Burrough did some intelligent work on defence and attack. Canterbury B Team The placing of R. H. Dench and E. R. Leask, both usually locks, in the front row is the most notable feature of the Canterbury B Rugby team announced yesterday. The team to play Hurunul at Walkari on Wednesday, is: W. LeWis (University A); R. King (New Brighton), B. Martin (Lincoln College), F. A. Fowler (Hurunui); M. McEwan (Christchurch), P. Peacocke (Lincoln College); M. T. Brown (University A): J. Ryan (Lincoln College); N. G. Cornelius (Amberley), V. Stewart (Marist), D. Wynne (Merivale-Papanui), J. K. Phillips (Linwood), Dench (Linwood). M. J. Sheehan (Darfield); Leask (New Brighton).
