Pascoe Wins Cycle Tour

WELLINGTON.
The New Zealand cycling team for the Tour of Tasmania will be B. Pascoe (Waikato), N. Lyster (Wellington), R. Oliver (East Coast N. 1.), B. Wells (Waikato), and A. Scott (Auckland).
The team was selected after the national final of the Air New Zealand cycling trials which ended in Hutt Valley yesterday. For the tour of New Caledonia, leaving on September 8, J. Broome (Auckland), will be captain and manager, and F. Fleck (Waikato) will also go. The Saturday morning 50mile stage of the trials included only two hill climbs
but provided several incidents. About half-way the field was split after 14 riders ’ broke away and stayed ahead : until the finish. Many of the leading contestants were in thife bunch, including the favoured Wellington pair, B. Cornish and Lyster, also B. White (Auckland) and Pascoe. Then Cornish and M. Baker (Palmerston North) both punctured. With two miles remaining Pascoe tried to ride away but White hung grimly to him. and it was only in the last 200 yards that Pascoe sprinted clear to take line honours. Bonus points were added for hill climbs and so after the first stage ended the over-all placings were; Pascoe, 2:3:2, 1; White 2sec behind. 2; Lyster. 9sec, 3; Bason (Waikato). 12sec, 4; Fleck, Scott, Atkinson (Auckland), Wells, R. Brown (E.C.N.1.), Oliver and R. Bush (Canterbury. 15sec (equal) 5. Lyster Leader When the field left Palmerton North yesterday, Lyster wore the tour leader* jersey.
