No Change Of School Site

There was “no possibility” of the Christchurch Technical Institute taking over the Hagley High School site in the forseeable future, said the regional superintendent of education (Mr H. M. McMillan) yesterday. “Taere is some speculation going on about the future of Hagley High Schol, and I am anxious to end this,” he said. Parents seeking enrolment for their children at the school and teachers interested in applying for positions on the staff could be assured that no change in the position or status of Hagley High School was to be made. “In the next five years there will be no need to consider any other use for the site,” Mr McMillan said. “I wish to make it clear that Hagley High School caters for all courses, at all levels, and is likely to continue ■ so throughout the 19705,” he said. Mr McMillan said, that it present population trends continued then some alternative use for Hagley High School might become a necessitv. “But it will be many

years before the school’s board of governors, the Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council, and the Department of Education consider this.” Speculation on the future of Hagley High School has arisen because of its location and because it is known that • technical institute education . will eventually require extra i , sites and buildings in Christ-! ' church. The school’s Site, close to 1 industry, and faciiiites which! ! would allow the development ’ of a more corporate life with- ’ in the Technical Institute are ’ understood to have placed it ' on a list of alternative sites ' being considered by the ’ Technical Institute. > The rapid development of • technical institutes in other ’■ centres and the siting and building problems that have ' followed are an important in--1 dication that similar prob--1 leins will also be felt Dy the ' Christchurch Technical Insti--1 tute. The institute’s board of governors is known to be ' considering additional sites in I the city area, and has ex- ■ pressed publicly reservations i about development possibili- ■ ties on the present site in ’ Moorhouse Avenue.
