Ceylon Press Move
(N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) COLOMBO, July 15.
The Ceylon Cabinet has appointed a committee to implement Government policy towards the press. The committee comprises the Ministers of Information and Broadcasting (Mr R. S. Perera), Housing and Construction (Mr Pieter Keuneman) and Communications (Mr Leslie Goonewardene). The manifesto of the United Front Parties led by the Prime Minister (Mrs Bandaranaike) for the General Election last May said: “Freedom of the press will.be ensured. Independent newspapers will be encouraged as a means to end the present domination of the daily press! by capitalist monopolies.” The major newspaper groups in Ceylon are the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon, Independent Newspapers, and the Times of Ceylon group, all of which publish dailies and weeklies in English, Tamil and Sinhalese. Associated Newspapers of Ceylon, regarded as the bastion of Right-wing opposition to the new Government, were attacked and put out of action for two days by a mob of thousands of people on May 29, the day Mrs Bandaranaike was sworn in as Prime Minister.
