POLLUTION IN U.S.
Warning By Hickel (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 15. The United States Secretary of the Interior (Mr Walter Hickel) has threatened court action to stop persistent cases of the pollution of rivers and lakes by industrial discharge of the poisonous metal, mercury. In a telegram t the Governors of 17 states, Mr Hickel said that the discharge of mercury into rivers presented an intolerable threat to the health and safety of Americans. “The Administration is developing hard evidence, and will seek court action in any confirmed case of mercury pollution if correction measures are not taken swiftly on local levels,” his telegram said.
Recent reports indicate that dozens of lakes and waterways in the United States are threatened by the discharge of mercury, which can persist in nature for up to 100 years before its disintegration. Its effects on human nerve and brain tissues are incurable.
