GEN. GROVES DEAD

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 15.

Lieutenant-General Leslie Groves, who directed the development of the atomic bomb in the Second World War, has died in Washington at the age of 73. While others have been called the “fathers” of the atomic bomb, General Groves won a place in history as the director of th 1 ' Manhattan Project. In conditions of utmost secrecy, he crisscrossed the United States, coordinating the research of often-temperamental scientific experts. General Groves also persuaded industrial giants and small specialist companies alike into working on the various facets of the atomic programme, and encouraged them all through the many months of frustration and disappointment that preceded the break-through in 1945.
