June Warmer, Wetter
The weather during June at Lincoln College was mild, with above-average rainfall, according to the college’s monthly meteorological report.
Although the cold spell of May continued into the early part of the month, with some sharp frosts (seven degrees on June 8), the rest of the month was mild, with maximum temperatures well into the fifties for nine successive days, reaching 60 degrees on June 26. Although temperatures were above average (the mean temperature was 44.4 degrees), they followed the pat, tern of the last few years. No southerly storms were recorded, nor hail nor snow. Lawns at Lincoln continued to need cutting, while cultivation was possible in the dry period at the end of the month. There were 3.12 inches of
rain, bringing the total for the year to U.B6in, about average for the time of year, with the exception of 1968 (an abnormally wet year) when 20.61 in were recorded. Because the June rain fell at well-spaced intervals there was no incidence of waterlogging. The hours of sunshine recorded, 101, were higher than for June in the last two years, but lower than in 1967, when 142.2 hours were recorded. Both the mean maximum (53.1 deg.) and the mean minimum temperatures (35.7 deg.) were higher than in the last three years. The mean earth temperature, 42.3 deg., was also higher. The mean force of wind was 2, compared with 2.2 for the last three years; while the total miles of wind were 3486, well down on last year’s 4361.
