SWIM BIDS FAIL

(N.Z.P:A.‘Reuter—Copyright) SANTA CLARA (California). The American swimmer, Miss D. Meyer, failed by ssec in an attempt to set a new world mark for the women’s 800 metres freestyle at the Santa Clara international meeting. Miss Meyer, aged 17, winner of three gold medals at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, made a great run at the record—set earlier this year by Miss K. Moras (Australia)— but there was no one to push her to the limit. She recorded 9min 14.6 sec.

M. Spitz (California), bolder of the men’s 100 metres butterfly world record, won the event easily today in 56.45ec, but was 6sec short of his world mark.
