Tape Unlimited

The Post Office will in future not restrict the amount of cellulose tape or gummed paper used for fastening packages posted within New Zealand. Previously, the use of tape and gummed paper on packets and printed material made up in package form was restricted to one-third of the folds and edges of a package. The new conditions apply only to items in package form, not those in envelopes, but all the items will still be subject to examination. Cheaper Power The electricity used by the Marley’s Hill base station of the Canterbury mountain radio service, part of the Search and Rescue Organisation, will be supplied at the cheaper domestic rather than commercial rates by the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board. At its meeting yesterday, the board was told that the service was non-pro-fit-making and that the Post Office had dispensed with a licence fee. Confusion had arisen because the service leased a building owned by an electronics firm. Licence Renewals Many motorists are continuing to renew their driving licences. According to the Transport Department, drivers who hold licences for several years should check to see that their licences are current. On a number of occasions it had been found that with such licences, which could run for two, three, four or five years, it was easy to forget just when they expired. White Herons Four white herons have adopted Little River as their temporary home, and have attracted a great deal of interest as they perch in large trees overlooking the old railway yard. Residents cannot recall this happening before, although white herons are common enough visitors to Akaroa Harbour mudflats at this time of year.
