Exam. Costs Queried
The increase in entrance and subject fees for the School Certificate examination was questioned at a meeting of the Linwood High School Board this week. For a pupil sitting in five subjects the cost to him of the examination now amounts to 88.50. The chairman of the board (Professor T. E. Carter), said that the school certificate exam was merely an indication that a student had reached a satisfactory standard. “Therefore this should be
included as part of a child’s free education,” be said. More thought should be given to the accrediting of! fifth-form subjects. the I principal (Mr J. Orman) said. The board resolved to refer the matter to the Department of Education and the Secondary School Boards' Association and to support the recommendation of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association that a system of internal assessment take the place of the external examination in fifth-form■ subjects.
