Many Courses Being Held At Lincoln
Co-operative packing of fruit and the relative advantages of a central marketing system for perishable fruits are the two major topics of discussion at a fourday course for fruitgrowers being held at Lincoln College. The growers come from all parts of the South Island. The fruitgrowers are discussing the retailing of perishable fruits. Other subjects include orchard management, irrigation, and frost control. The course will ob- | serve research work in the ■college’s department of hortiI culture.
This is only one of a number of courses and conferences at present being held at the college. By the end of this week more than 800 persons will have attended such gatherings at the college. The courses include preentry study weeks for those who will later attend Lincoln’s diploma courses in agriculture or horticulture, and teaching courses in welding for young farmers. Residential courses have included a civil defence training course, a Ministry of Works overseers’ study week, and a National Safety Association course for Young Farmers’ Club safety officers. There are also two major conferences. The conference I of the New Zealand Grass-
land Association, which is being attended by a large contingen' of overseas visitors, concludes today; and the college’s annual farmers’ conference, which will be officially opened tomorrow morning, begins this evening. Four hundred farmers from all parts of the South Island are expected at this meeting This pattern will be repeated in August and in the period from November to February. Among the meetings in August will be a seeds course for 40 to 50 grain and seed merchants, and further short courses for prospective entrants to college diploma courses in 1971 and 1972.
