Lyttelton Road Tunnel
Sir, —What explanation, if any, do you think was given to the Queen for the mucky, multi-coloured ceiling of the Christchurch-Lyttelton road tunnel? And what of the tunnel cleaning machine? Was it proudly demonstrated to Her Majesty, or was it hidden in shame under a cover?— Yours, etc., C. M. ANDERSON.
March 17, 1970. [Mr R. A. Witbrock, chairman of the ChristchurchLyttelton Road Tunnel Authority, replies: “1 cannot agree with your correspondent that the ceiling is mucky and multi-coloured. There has been a marked improvement in the cleanliness of the ceiling since tests have started with the new cleaning machine, and tests are still continuing. There is six years accumulation of traffic grime to be removed. Many favourable comments are received from both overseas visitors and local people about the over-all cleanliness of the tunnel. The machine was in the car park where it was in full view of all tunnel users during the Royal visit.”]
