"All the signs indicate that marijuana should have a clean bill of health and alcohol should be regarded as dangerous."—Mr James K. Baxter in University Society quarterly. “I accept the view expressed by many users that for them marijuana smoking is an act of aimpie enjoyment and harmless. But is it only that? How frequent is chronic excessive cannabis syndrome? —Mr J* x • Seymour, senior lecturer in law at Auckland University. (And any number, of either persuasion.)
When the Hippie Millennium dawns, And the Cannabis, the coveted Grass, Is as Common as the Grass in Lawns, Will It come to pass, That the Liquor, the Glass, The Flagon, the Flask, The Bottle, the Cask, Will be obsolete Objects, dry Junk? And the Moderate Drinker, the Drunk, The ‘Alkie,’ the Table Wine Faddist, The sanest Consumers, the maddest, Will pass from the Scene? Sir, does it All mean That a drink-fuddled World’s getting nearer The End of the Alcohol Era, The Day when the Pot Age Replaces the Sot Age? When a Couple of comforting Reefers a Day Will brighten Life’s cheerless Way, Assuming, of course, No Excess, no Remorse, And a new Human Race Ourselves to replace! A Race that won’t make Itself sicker With Grass than WE are with our Liquor. When the Reefer I’m handed Has been bonded, and branded. And the State stands Surety For its Strength, and Purity, And there’s Tax in the Price, When it’s sold at the Dairy, And Doctors aren’t wary, Passed round in the Board Room, Staff Room, and Wardroom, An ESTABLISHMENT Vice Like our Cocktails and Ice, We shall have all the Answers we lack, But as Usual, too late to go Back!... (Sir, don’t be alarmed, The Stuff can be FARMED. Can’t Market Researches be made By our Experts at Overseas Trade?)
