Wage Increases
Sir, —I am delighted to see that J. Watties Canneries and Unilever (N.Z.), Ltd, have conceded such substantial wage increases to workers who, while not the lowest paid, are in the lower half iof the wage scale below the ‘s4s per week average. I heart-
ily commend them for their actions and express the hope that other groups of employers employing workers well under the average will, of their own volition and without waiting for either Government or Court, act to improve the take-home pay of their lower-paid workers without prejudice to relativities. It is time we had some industrial wage press-ups from the bottom. This is a state of affairs the employers should [have a good look at themi selves—and act on.—Yours, etc., H. G. KILPATRICK. March 20, 1970.
