College Beats School In Exciting Last Over

Needing 92 to win in even time,. Christ’s College had two wickets to spare when the winnings runs were hit in the last over of the match against Christchurch Boys’ High School yesterday. College continued from its overnight 142 for two wickets to 192, falling to the bowling of I. Taylor and K. Squire. The School second innings was marked by two partnerships of more than 40, some determined batting by the top scorers, and a valuable last wicket stand of 22. The Ormond brothers again bowled well but School's improved batting kept it in the game. Two quick wickets put College under pressure after the final innings started but E. Newton, who played a major role in the eventual win, and A. Ormond added 30 in 21 minutes to leave 14 needed with 17 minutes remaining. Ormond was brilliantly caught by G. Smith from a skied offdrive and J. Lee took two wickets in two balls at 81. Squire bowled S. Robinson at 88, then M. Ormond was run out when two runs were needed.
