Race Against Time To Clear Whales
(New Zealand Press Association)
GISBORNE, March 20.
It is now a race against time for the Ministry of Works, Gisborne, staff who are trying to clear Wainui Beach of 60 rapidly decomposing whales. The whales came ashore early on Wednesday.
Last night some of the carcases burst and spewed entrails on to the sand, adding to general stench that is quickly pervading the area.
Work on the beach continued until after 10 o’clock last night and was resumed soon after first light this morning.
Two trucks from Wellington will take up to 10 tons of whale meat off the hands of the Ministry of Works. Mr P. H. Fisher, resident engineer with the Ministry of Works, said today that a cat food company from Wellington had asked if it could take up to 10 tons of the meat. “We have agreed to let them have it as long as they do not interfere with our disposal operations," he said.
