Talks With Comalco
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Mar. 20.
The Deputy Leader of the Opposition and former Minister of Electricity in the Labour Government (Mr Watt) left for Australia this afternoon for discussions with Comalco about the proposed aluminium smelter in Southland.
Mr Watt said before he left that he had been invited by the company some years ago to visit its works in Tasmania, Melbourne and Queensland. He said he expected that the question of whether or not Lake Manapouri should be raised would be discussed.
“1 have always been confiIdent that sufficient power lean be found for the (aluminium industry alone i without raising the lake." he said. ; “But this does not necessarily mean that 1 am confident that sufficient power can be found for the aluminiiftn industry plus the proposed further uses of power without raising the lake levels. This is simply because I do not know the precise terms of the 1966 agreement made by the present Government with Comalco.”
Mr Watt said he expected to be in Australia for about a week.
