Waterfront workers will begin a five-day national strike tomorrow which will bring Australian import and export trade almost to a standstill. The waterside workers are claiming a $14.20 a week pay rise and an extra week’s leave each year paid at average earnings instead of ‘ the present $55 a week base rate they receive. They also are seeking improved shift allowances, higher overtime rates and a week’s compassionate leave in the event of family tragedy. Employers have offered the waterside workers a $3.50 a week incr e a s e.—Sydney, March 20.
