Hagley Park Stadium?
Sir, —In the course of many years residence in this beautiful city, nothing has given me more pleasure than that magnificent stand of ponderosa pines in the north-east corner of Hagley Park. The motorway across from Salisbury Street had to be accepted, though with a heavy heart (stop signs and traffic jams in Park Terrace!). But
this idea of a stadium is unthinkable. Even if the pines were not destroyed, the jeauty of their setting would be, and the effect would be, deplorable.—Yours, etc., C.M. February 27, 1970. Sir, —1 am appalled that the guardian of our parks and reserves should suggest that the north-east corner of the park would be suitable for the erection of this palace of physical health and parking lot I had always thought that the quid pro quo for the motor way through the park was to be that the north-east portion of Harper Avenue would be planted as park land. For my part 1 consider that if the council were to permit this addlepated scheme to go ahead, it would be a breach of faith with the public, particularly so where there are numerous alternative sites the use of which would not result in the destruction of our environment and amenities.— Yours, etc., URBS.
