NAGLE ON 66
j Open Golf Leader (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The veteran Australian professional. K. D. G. Nagle, aged 49, again underlined the apparently ageless quality of his golf by shooting a seven-under-par 66 in the first round of the Victorian Open championship yesterday. The Englishman. G. B. Wolstenholme, had a chance to join Nagle in the lead. but he missed an 18-inch putt on the final green. Wolstenholme is in a group of four on 67, the others being the Australian amateur champion,- R. Shearer, A. Neil, and the New South Wales professional, D. Graham. The defending champion, Nagle played unruffled accurate golf to master the 6456-yard, par-73 hilly course. His round of 33 on each nine included eight birdies and a one-over. The leading New Zealander was S. Vernon, on 68. The scores of his countrymen were: J. M. Lister 70, W. J. Godfrey 70, T. Kendall 72, G. Holst 72, H. Kennedy 74, B. T. Boys 75, and A. J. Palmer 75. Lister, who became a tournament favourite after his 12-under-par 61 in a pro-amateur event on the course on Wednesday, was nine strokes worse yesterday. He had tree trouble on the fifth to drop two strokes, and eventually turned in a par-37. He was three under for the second nine.
