HAGLEY RETAINS YACHT TROPHY

(ty Our Yachting Reporter) Hagley High School retained, the Peter Mander Trophy, the major secondary school yachting prize in Canterbury, when its entrant Quest improved upon its three earlier second platings by winning the final race of the series at Mount Pleasant yesterday.

The final heat of the annual Junior. Cherub contest produced a result almost parallel with the over-all platings. Quest finished Msec ahead of Mirage (Christchurch Boys’ High School), the Linwood High School yachts, Kimihia and Amigo, again dueling keenly for the minor platings. Amigo (R. Whitmore and Miss A. Le Page) gained the upper hand in the final race to finish ahead of Kimihia (C. Price and M. Hay), but it was the latter, with 13) points, which trailed Quest (N. Jackson and P. Stemmer, 6f points), and Mirage (R. Smith and D. Bridges, 10}) in the over-all platings. Amigo was half a point back fourth.

Quest took over from the early leader. Kimihia, and bad opened a comfortable lead over Mirage, which was being challenged by Amigo, by the time the yachts rounded the mark negr the finishing line. Mirage drew away from Amigo as the race progressed, but was not able to pull back the Hagley High School boat. Mirage finally, beat Amigo by more than 44mln tor second place. Kimihia was just over 2min further back. The first Bangiora High School yacht. Rangiora, would have finished fifth, but It crossed the line outside the finishing marks and lost four places while manoeuvring to recroaa correctly.

F CLASS A. Wornail, sailing Pepe, won the P elate event on handicap in the first of the regatta races. He had a winning margin of only Bsk over Hallo (M. Wheeler) on corrected times, with Miss E. Maynard, In Top Cat, third.

The fastest time, as expected, was gained by Canterbury's national Tanner Cup representative, P. Lester (Vitesse), and P. Townsend (Zodiac) we® second. SSsec back. Towneend had a keen tussle with P. Mayhard (Tyke), who missed second place by only 3sec. The A class catamaran. Belinda (C. Metzger), cleared out from the open class handicap fleet at the start and effortlessly beat the second finisher. Kotuku, an O.K. Dinghy sailed by M. Johnston. The leading Junior Cherub crew in Canterbury, N. and G. England (Rana), was next, B»ec ahead

of Omega, a Moth sailed by R. Smith. Johnston shared the handicap honours with J. Cook (Sparta, Moth), with Smith third.
