Envelopes Destroyed

Almost a third of the 300,000 mystery envelopes offered for sale by Christchurch Jaycees for the Crippled Children Society swimming pool were destroyed by police yesterday. The envelopes had not been sold and their destruction was in accordance with gaming regulations. About $40,000 was raised. The campaign organiser (Mr N. W. Hosking) said that it would not be known for several days whether any of the major prizes had been included in the envelopes destroyed. A check would have to be made within the next few days with the business houses that had given prizes, he said. The winner of the puzzle competition run in conjunction with the sale of envelopes would be determined on October 25, Mr Hosking said. The successful contestant will receive a luxury cruise of the South Pacific valued about $lOOO.
