Youths Charged With Assault In Park
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 26. A gang of about 10 youths approached a couple in a car in the Michael Savage Memorial Park, kicked at the vehicle and jumped on the bonnet, Mr D. G. Sinclair, i S.M., was told today. Detective Sergeant T. J. Nunan said a bottle of beer was thrown through one of the windows of the car.
A briefcase was stolen from the car and the complainant; Barry Jeffrey, fearing for his safety, gave his watch to one of the gang. Dean Rua, aged 17, a labourer, pleaded guilty to' a charge that with John Nathan, aged 17, a workman, he assaulted Jeffrey, and that with Nathan he behaved, in. a-dis-orderly manner in the park about 1 a.m. on August 16. Rua also admitted stealing Jeffrey’s briefcase and stealing a transistor radio from a car on July 12. Rua was remanded in; custody for a week for. sentence. He had nothing to say. Nathan 1 denied assaulting
Jeffrey and behaving in a disorderly manner and was remanded until September 8. Terrence Moana Shepherd, aged 18, a workman, charged with robbing Jeffrey of his $5O watch, was remanded on bail for a week‘without plea. 1 It had earlier been stated that other members of the gang ,would. appeal in. the Children’s Court. . > :
