Ulster
Sir, —It seems incredible that differences in religion are responsible for the rioting in Northern Ireland. Ageold hostility between the two sides is quoted as the reason and the fact that New Zealand is a new country is used as an argument to account for the absence of trouble here. The cause of the trouble is quite different from that given in the papers. It is really a struggle between monopoly capital and entrenched money power and the masses. The usual “divide and conquer” technique is applied to the contest, and the whole matter is turned into a religious tussle. In fact, there is a contradiction which has turned to an antagonistic one, and the basis of which is economic.—Yours, etc., P. J. A. August 20, 1969.
