CELIBACY ISSUE

Debate In Europe (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CHUR (Switzerland), July 7. Liberal European Roman Catholic Bishops are expected to speak in favour of a softer Vatican line on the controversial issue of celibacy for priests during a four-day conference which began in Chur today. The talks, which bring together 100 bishops and 14 cardinals from all over Europe, has before it a report on priests and more senior members of the clergy who have left the Roman Catholic Church to marry. This is likely to cause a lively debate between liberal and conservative trends at the meeting, and it will pave the way for further discussion at the full synod of bishops in Rome next OctoI ber.
