‘GREAT INTEREST IN INTERVIEW 69’

Whether persons agreed or disagreed with certain aspects of the Interview 69 programme it had aroused considerable interest and lively discussion, said the chairman of the project, the Rev. R. M. O’Grady, at the monthly meeting of the executive of the National Council of Churches in Christchurch on Tuesday. Giving an interim report on the television series, Mr O'Grady said that newspaper coverage throughout New Zealand was an indication of the widespread interest it enjoyed. By invitation, Mr R. H. T. Thompson, a lecturer in sociology at the University of Canterbury, spoke to the executive about the world consultation on racism held in London in May and which was sponsored by the World Council of Churches. The Rev D. M. Taylor, the general secretary of the N.C.C, said that Mr Thompson indicated some of the tensions which had made the tasks of the consultative body very difficult Mr Taylor said that the executive received a report from the joint working committee set up by the National Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand which held its first meeting in Wellington at the beginning of this month. The report would be widely circulated later in the year, said Mr Taylor.

The director of inter-church aid (Mr F. G. Heard) reported that Mr R. Cottrell had been appointed to replace another New Zealander, Mr G. Brewster, as the director of Sharan. an organisation which was helping Tibetan refugees in India. Mr Cottrell would leave New Zealand in a few months. The executive chairman (the Rev. A H. MacLeod) welcomed the Rev. Canon J. O. Rymer, who was attending the meeting for the first time. Canon Rymer was present as

an alternate for the Dean of Wellington (the Very Rev. W. Hurst). Dean Hurst’s alternate (the Rev. W. E. Limbrick) who Canon Rymer was replacing, has been appointed warden of Selwyn College, Dunedin.
