PRICE OF WHEAT

Move For Rise Defeated

A move by Otago growers to have the price of wheat raised by 10c a bushel was defeated at the Dominion agriculture section of Federated Farmers, in Timaru yesterday.

Speakers in support of the rise said it was four to five years since the price of wheat had been set at *1.45 a bushel. If the dollar depreciated by 3 to 4 per cent a year, there had in fact been a depreciation in price of about 20 per cent By accepting the existing price, farmers were leaving themselves open for a reduction, it was felt By seeking a rise now, Federated Farmers would strengthen their hand in future negotiations with the Government The chairman (Mr S. J. Lister) said delegates should reconsider this question. "To maintain your basic price, how can you ask for an increase, and expect retention?” he said. Under the present circumstances, growers could not seriously expect a rise of 10c a bushel or more, said Mr A L Mulholland. “We fought hard last year for a retention of the existing price. We just can’t go to the Government and ask for more.”
