Surprise Win By Marist

MARIST Ifc Tries by R. Gray and O. Stopforth; P. Heapby two penalty goals and P. Fraher two conversions. LINCOLN COLLEGE 13: D. Elvidge and W. Howard tries; S. Hurray two conversions and a penalty goal. Lincoln’s Inability to last a full game enabled Marist to upset the college side, which

at the end of the match was i exhausted. For the most of the game Lincoln looked clearly the better side. . Spirited attacks by Its fleet-footed baek-line regularly forced Marist to scamper in defence. P. Robertson, the Marist fullback, showed*ri!ogged courage on defence and contributed greatly to preventing Lincoln from scoring more points. After having its attacks repulsed by Marist, Lincoln began to wilt in the final IS minutes. Marist seised the opportunity and reversed the situation. Its efforts were rewarded when Stopforth crashed over for Marist to give his side victory in the dying stages. The forward ’ packs were evenly matched. Lincoln relied more on the tap-back from the line-outs, whereas Marist was generally able to take clean two-handed takes. Although Marist obtained more clean possession from line-outs, Lincoln gained more bail from loose rucks. The Lincoln College backline was always dangerous: crisp running and good handling gave the wings room to move. In contrast, the Marist backs played defensively. L. Karatau, the Lincoln halfback. made several good breaks close to the scrum and gave his outsides .efficient service. Murray played a steady game at full-back.

The Lincoln forwards, L. Scherp and Elvtdge, played well and V. Stewart, the Marist lock, gained plenty of possession in the line-outs. Heaphy, at No. 8 for Marist, kicked two fine goaie. Referee: Mr A. R. Taylor.
