New Brighton Ahead In Senior Rugby Contest

The defeat of the previously-unbeaten Suburbs, and two other unexpected results marked the ninth round of the Christchurch senior Rugby competition on Saturday.

New Brighton, last season’s champion side, now has a half-point lead over Suburbs. * The D.C.L. Shield could hinge on the outcome of next Saturday’s match between these two sides.

Shirley, by beating Suburbs, moved into third berth on the points ladder. Both sides played a similar style of Rugby based on rugged, mobile forwards but Shirley enjoyed a slight advantage for a good part of the second-half and scored six points in the final four minutes. Results:— Shirley 12, Suburbs 6. Old Boys 9, Merivale-Papfi-nui 6. New Brighton 17, Sydenham 3. University B 14, Albion 8. University A 32, Belfast 6. Marist 16, Lincoln College 13. Christchurch 18, Linwood X

The other two unexpected results were Christchurch's win over Linwood by the surprisingly large margin of 15 points, and Lincoln College fell even further from grace by losing to Marist. Earlier in the season Linwood and Lincoln College appeared strong contenders for the championship and though Linwood Is not completely out of the running Lincoln’s chances appear to have diminished beyond recognition. It was a good day for the University club, both Its sides scoring wins. The A side proved too fast for Belfast and won

easily and the B side, with two last-minute penalty goals, scarped to victory over Albion. Old Boys narrowly beat Meri-vale-Papanut In an even encounter and New Brighton, after being held by Sydenham for three-quarters of the game, scored 11 points in the final stages to win comfortably. The top pionts scorer of the day was the University A full-

back, W. Lewis. He included two tries in his tally of 34 points and tor the same team If. Sakata scored two tries and took his club total tor the season to 11. D. A. Arnold boosted Christchurch,'s scoring with two dropped goals And ha has now kicked eight In club matches this season. ,
