SCHOOL TO APPLY FOR GRANT AGAIN
Another application for a grant to buy an electronic calculating machine will be made by the board of governors of Christchurch Boys' High School. The Department of Education declined an earlier application. The headmaster (Mr C. F. S. Caldwell) explained to the board yesterday that the calculator cost kbout $7BO and would be used by the mathematics department for the study of statistics. The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that several Christchurch secondary schools had applied for grants to buy similar types of machines. Some of them, after being refused aid, had purchased them themselves. The calculator sought by Christchurch Boys* High School was the most sophisticated and the most expensive of those of which he had heard, he said. Mr Caldwell said that no
other hand or mechanical calculator was suitable for the mathematics department’s use. He believed the matter was still open and that the Education Department was probably reviewing the situation.
The department granted $789 to cover the cost of interior renovations.
Mr Caldwell said the school had received a letter from a Christchurch clothing firm wanting to know if the school intended to change the style of the school uniform or to continue with the existing one. He said that the school had kept the existing style for about 10 years. Changes had been developing in school uniforms which were now acceptable. A sub-committee of Mr Caldwell. Dr T. R. Anderson (the chairman), and Dr S. C. Peddie will look into the matter.
