Memorial Avenue Traffic Lanes

Traffic lanes will be marked on Memorial Avenue from just east of Greers Road intersection to Russley Road, the Waimairi County Council decided last evening. It was agreed to start the lanes 100 ft east of Greers Road so as to give a lane for traffic turning right into Greers Road, and to make this length of Memorial Avenue a no-stopping tone. The chief traffic inspector (Mr A. Goldsmith) said that there had been requests for lanes from the Automobile Association and other interested parties for lanes from Clyde Road to the airport. Earlier, 'he had not recommended this, one of his main reasons being that speeds were too high in the limited speed zone between Grahams Road and the entrance to Russley golf links, and this could be hazardous without control over speeds at all times.

Since that time, the limited speed zone had been replaced by a 40 miles an hour limit to cover the length where there were houses. But, said Mr Goldsmith, Memorial Avenue from Clyde

Road to Greers Road was only 50ft wide, and to lane it would be an unnecessary risk, as with cars parked outside houses, there would be only 16ft of roadway for the two lanes. It would be unreasonable to impose a no-stopping restriction. From Greers Road to Russley Road, where the avenue was wide enough to give two 30ft lanes, there was room for them and parking. The Ministry of Transport was asked to alter limited speed zones to 40 miles an hour zones on Harewood Road, the Main North Road through Belfast, Marshland Road, Lower Styx Road at both Brooklands and Spencerville, and Harbour Road, at Brooklands.

The Ministry was . also asked to survey the Main North Road between Cranford Street and Styx to indicate the location of a pedestrian crossing. The Ministry reported that there would be no problem with the four-lane

tender of $137,800 for the Bishopdale tavern to M. L. Paynter, Ltd, was recorded m the building permits, which amounted to $590,915 for April, compared with $253,578 for April, 1968. The average cost per square foot rose from $5.93 a year ago to $7.10.

Wider Uses.— A counties’ conference remit was suggested to permit the wider use of the money received from land subdividers so that it could be applied to such things as Plunket rooms, welfare and recreation. Cr R. C. Neville said the urban counties’ meeting in Christchurch yesterday would not support the idea. The Counties’ Asso-ciation-will be asked for its views. Broad Park.— After considering a report on deficiencies in caretaking and maintenance of the lavatories at Broad Park, the council terminated its arrangement with the Waimairi Surf Life-saving Club, authorised the employment of a caretaker, and decided to try to find an honorary ranger. Reserve. —It was decided to ask the Lands and Survey Department if Crown land in Grahams Road could be used as a recreational reserve.

, Prosecution.— lt was decided to prosecute Messrs Millward and Black, building contractors, for pouring concrete for a garage foundation without giving 24 hours notice to the council.

Lighting.—On the suggestion of Cr F. J. Aitken, the Ministry of Works was asked to report on the proposed installation of yellow sodiumvapour street lamps to mark intersections, as is done in Paparua county. Yaldhurst Road could be a starting point, said Cr Aitken.

Fly-casting. Permission was given to the Canterbury Anglers’. Club to use the pond in Jellie Park for fly-fishing instruction on alternate Sundays during the winter. New Pitch.—The estimates committee was asked to make provision for the laying of a senior cricket pitch at Bishopdale Park.

Soccer Move.— Told that the Riccarton Association Football Club wished to vacate its two grounds at Middleton Park, the council agreed to make two grounds available at Ray Blank Park, and to approve in principle of the building of a changingroom.
