SURFING TOUR

P. Carpinter Nominated

P. Carpinter (Taylor’s Mistake) has been selected as Canterbury nominee for a place in the New Zealand surf life-saving team to tour the United States later this year. Each of the nine districts in the New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association has been asked to nominate one surfer for the six-man team. “The districts must guarantee the return air fares of the team members (about 8700) by the end of this month,” the president of the Canterbury Association (Mr M. B. Restall) said yesterday. Nominations were called from the Canterbury clubs and Carpinter was chosen from 11 candidates.

Carpinter, who is 21 has a diploma in physical education from the University of Otago and is a student at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. While studying for his diploma he wrote an article on the mechanics of swimming turns, which was acclaimed in swimming circles throughout the world.
