Boysenberry Crop Ruined By Rain
(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, January 6. Nelson boysenberry growers were hard hit by a rain storm last night.
Damage worth many thousands of dollars was done. Even half-formed fruit suffered. A Redwood Valley grower, Mr R. H. Vollmer, estimated today that up to 40 per cent of the boysenberry crop had been' lost. “I did hear that one grower lost a complete crop but he was in a very exposed area.” The loss suffered by Mr Vollmer and by two other
growers in the area was estimated at several thousand dollars. Their gardens total about 10 acres. Mr Vollmer said many growers had been delaying pick-! ing because the processing factory was to open today. The exporting of choice fruit to the Australian market, planned for Wednesday, has been cancelled. Mr Vollmer said that the ripe- fruit was very susceptible to wind damage. “A lot of the crops now will have to go into jam," he said. No damage has been reported to tobacco and hops or in orchards.
