Committee On West Coast Maori Land

(New Zealand Press Association) HAWERA, January 6. A committee of 15 members has been set up to advise the Maori Trustee on matters affecting the West Coast settlement reserve lands.

Announcing this today, the chairman of the comraitte, Mr D. Keepa, a Waitara farmer, said it was the first time in the history of the reserve that such a committee had been recognised by the Maori Trustee, who is the nominal owner of the reserve lands as trustee for some 5000 beneficiaries.

1 Mr Keepa said a substantial number of the owners had elected the committee, which was similar to the committee set up to investigate the incorporation of the reserve lands. This was still the objective of the owners. The committee was a blend of youth and experience and its widely representative membership included professional men, businessmen and farmers. he said. , “The committee is stil anxious to get the support of a

greater number of beneficiaries and for this purpose will be visiting many of the beneficiaries in the Auckland, Taranaki, Wanganui and Wellington areas within the next few months,” he said.
