Only 18 Hours

Mexico City time is 19 hours behind that of New Zealand—but by the time the Olympic Games are held, the difference will be only 18 hours. A reporter of “The Press” discovered this yesterday,

but only after exhaustive inquiries. The Dominion Weather Bureau, for example, said that Mexico City was 19 hours behind New Zealand time. The Post Office, which has a chart of time lapses throughout the world for night rate charge purposes, confirmed this, and so did Air New Zealand. However, Qantas, Deep Freeze, the N.Z.8.C., the N.Z.PA. and Thomas Cook and Son (travel agents), felt 18 hours was the right figure. Worse, an Auckland newspaper had offered 17 hours. Finally, Mr N. B. Lendrum, the Christchurch agent for Pan-American Airlines, put the matter straight. Mexico City time, he said, was the same as American Central Standard Time—the same as Chicago, for example. At present, he explained, this meant the time lapse was 19 hours. But on October 1, daylight saving would be used in that sector and the difference would be 18 hours.
