VIETNAM PRESS
Suspensions Explained (N Z P A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, Sept. 8. The South Vietnamese Information Minister, Mr Ton That Thien, said yesterday the press in Vietnam could not be completely free for 50 or even 100 years. “It will take many ■ years before the press in Vietnam reaches Western standards,” he told a news conference of foreign correspondents. Mr Thien, who abolished press censorship when he came into office three months ago, said the Vietnamese press did not really understand “the mechanics of press freedom.” The Minister, who returned two days ago from an overseas trip, called the conference to explain the recent suspension of three Saigon daily newspapers for publishing reports on corruption in the Government. Mr Thien yesterday rescinded the suspension.
