Children Warned
tN.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright? PRAGUE, September 3. Prague schoolchildren and students streaming back after the holidays were ordered yesterday to keep silent and avoid forming big groups when they passed sensitive points in the city. The instructions from the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Frantisek Hamouz) were broadcast over an early morning news bulletin. He told the children to give absolutely no cause for tough Soviet reaction outside the Prague radio building and the statue of Saint Wenceslas in Prague’s main square. The headmistress of one city school told N.Z.P.A.-Reuter that her staff were trying to ensure that the school year would begin as normally as possible. She said that her teachers would explain to the pupils—about 700 of them, ranging in age from six to 16—just why the Russians had marched in. “We will all tell them that the Russians did wrong. We cannot tell them anything else.”
She said that 99 per cent of the teachers in Prague shared her political views.
