Close Basketball Scoring

(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI. Close scoring helped to make the Wairarapa - Hutt Valley match one of the best played on the first day of the New Zealand women’s indoor basketball championships, at Wanganui, yesterday.

Wairarapa won, 41-40, after trailing 16-21 at half-time. Otago, the A grade title winner last year, convincingly beat the 1966 winner, Canterbury, 53-36.

Others to show promising form in the senior division were Auckland and Wellington, which had easy wins at the expense of Rotorua and Nelson, respectively. Wanganui, unlucky to miss selection in the A grade in its first year as host association, began well by beating Hawera, 47-38, in the A grade reserve. Results:

A Grade.—Otago 53. Canterbury 36: Wairarapa 41, Hutt Valley 40; Auckland 43, Rotorua 23; Wellington 50, Nelson 34. A Grade Reserve. —Wanganui 47, Hawera 38; Marlborough 61, Palmerston North 46; Southland 35, Waikato 19; Tauranga 39 North Taranaki 33; Waikato 40 Tauranga 39.
