Rugby Invitation From Formosa

Rugby enthusiasts in Formosa are keen that a New Zealand Rugby team should visit the Republic. Mr M. A. Connelly, the member of Parliament for Riccarton, who is in a delegation to Asia led by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath), said in a letter to “The Press” that this suggestion was made in Taipei last week. This could be done “on an occasion that a New Zealand team was going to Japan. However, any New Zealand touring team would be welcome,” said Mr Connelly. The idea was first suggested by the Mayor of Taipei (Mr Henry Ku-Shu Kao)

at a reception to the delegation, and emphasised later by the president of the Legislative Yuan (Assembly) of the Republic of China (Mr Huang KuoShu) at a dinner for tbe visitors. Colleagues of the president said he was a good Rugby player in his youth, said Mr Connelly. “He played full-back, and they said he was noted for his coolness and calmness under pressure,” Mr Connelly wrote. Rugby has been played in Formosa for 21 years, and the dignitaries said the standard had shown a great improvement in that time.
