Increase Of 1.6 Per Cent (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 1. Retail turnover increased by more than $6 million, or 1.6 per cent, in the June quarter this year compared with the same period last year. The Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker), reported on Saturday that the turnover for the June quarter was $389.1 million, compared with $383 million last year.
However, the increase was below the 1.9 per cent rise recorded in the March quarter. During the June quarter, retail grocers’ sales rose 8 per cent on 1967 figures. The turnover of stores in the “other food and drink” group increased by 4.5 per cent.
Chemists’ turnover rose by 4.1 per cent and the turnover on clothing by 0.2 per cent. The biggest fall was 7.9 per cent, for household appliances.
The turnover of hardware stores during the June quarter fell by 3.9 per cent, of furniture stores by 3.8 per cent, on footwear 2.2 per cent, of butchers 0.8 per cent, and of general, department, and variety stores by 0.6 per cent.
