NATURAL DAM

Water Danger Passes (N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Aug. 19. An estimated 250 m gallons of water of the 350 m gallons trapped by a naturally formed dam on the Mangaorangi stream, 26 miles from Gisborne, has drained and there is no longer any danger to farms and homes down stream. The 60ft high dam was formed by a slip on July 31. The level of the two-and-a-half-mile lake behind the dam dropped by 30ft between Saturday morning and Sunday night when water escaped through a cutting. An alert, imposed by the Gisborne City Council, the Poverty Bay County Council and the Civil Defence Organisation, has been lifted. The level of the Waimata River, into which the Mangaorangi Stream flows, rose to a minor flood level.
