ANTARCTIC TEAM

Training On Ruapehu (N.Z. Press Association) WAIOURU, Aug. 19. The 40 members of the 1968-69 New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme team began a week’s field training at Waiouru Military Camp this week-end in preparation for their tour of duties at Scott Base. After two days of lectures the team moved out today to begin four days training on the eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu. The instruction will include basic mountaineering, ski-ing, tent pitching, camping, field rescue and first aid.

The lectures introduced the men to the Antarctic and to New Zealand’s role in the scientific study of the continent.

The first party, including the superintendent of the D.S.I.R.’s Antarctic Division, Mr R. B. Thomson, and the Scott Base leader, Mr R. Foubister, of Christchurch, is scheduled to leave New Zealand from Christchurch on October 8.
