Dearer Whisky And Apples In Auckland
(N.Z Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Aug. 19. The prices of whisky and apples in Auckland increased today, the first day of trading since the price freeze ended at midnight on Saturday.
Few other prices were changed. The increases in the retail prices for whisky were up to 30c a bottle, making the retail cost $6. Wholesale prices rose about 25c to $5.30.
The Apple and Pear Board increased its price for cases of apples by between 25c and 30c today. Shoppers will now have to pay about 1c per lb more.
The increase was a normal step taken to meet cold storage costs, said the vicepresident of the Fruit Retailers’ Federation (Mr H. L.
Clark), but the price rise was smaller than usual.
The president of the Wholesale Wine and Spirits Merchants Federation (Mr L. A. Mills) said today that British whisky suppliers had told New Zealand distributors that they had no option but to increase their f.o.b. prices. Mr Mills said that the prices might vary from district to district but “in all probability” the retail increase would not exceed 30 cents.
